Georgetown Kentucky Mayor Everette Varney broke a council tie by voting against allowing smoking at bingo games. On October 1st of last year smoking was banned within city limits.
Members of American Legion Post 24, sponsor of a weekly charity bingo game in the city, asked that this be overturned for the game as revenues had greatly decreased since the ban. The organization argued the benefit from money for local chairities should outweigh the negative effects caused by second-hand smoke to the players.
The mayor simply stated he couldn't support an amendment that chose "charitable income over protecting the public health of our people."
