When creating Mega Friends, the founders wanted "not only offer a service where folks could meet for dating and romance but also the opportunity to meet others for non-romantic notions like finding a travel buddy, a sports buddy, someone just to chat with, a pen pal, a key pal or a good neighbor."
Mega Friends is a community as much (if not moreso) than it is a dating service. The software looks a little basic but it has a lot of cool features. The "Popular" list displays - in order - which members have the most friends on the site. Also, standard features like voting polls and forums are pretty well used by the membership. There is also the ability to post unlimited photos!
Mega Friends has enough free features for anyone to get a really good feel for the service without spending a cent.

How it Works:
There are two types of members - Gold and Free. You pay monthly for a Gold account, which gives you full access to all features and sending and receiving messages from all members.
Free members cannot read or reply to messages from other Free members. They also cannot surf anonymously, among other things. There are still quite a few ways they CAN communicate with other members, however. Along with creating a searchable profile, Free members can exchange 'Prepared Messages'. This is a list of about 100 phrases you can use to have a conversation.
